This German Infrastructure Leader Expands in India
Why Herrenknecht's decision to expand in Chennai is a sign of growing Indo-German collaboration
Germany’s Herrenknecht AG doubles down on India.
And is expanding its facility in Chennai.

As reported by Guidance Tamil Nadu and The Hindu Business Line, the global leader in tunnel boring machines (TBM) acquired a 12.4 acres large site for a new manufacturing facility with support from JLL India and will invest a total of INR 250 crore (around EUR 28 million).
Details on Herrenknecht in India:
➡️ Localisation rate achieved: 70%
➡️ Production of TBMs: 10-12 metro sized per year in total
➡️ Cost per TBM: USD 10 - 100 million depending on design and size
The TBMs support many important metro projects in India such as the Chennai Metro Rail Project, and others. Tunnel projects worth over INR 3 lakh crore (around EUR 33 billion) are planned for the next decade.
